Pad varnishing is an ancient method used by cabinetmakers to restore furniture to its original beauty.

There are several steps to this technique.

YOU WILL FIND BELOW THE APPLICATION METHODS

Description

BACKGROUND PREPARATION: 3 methods are possible.

1) – with Shellac hard primer 0506 (see § Base preparation)

2) – Paste pore filler 0511. You ‘ll need: paste pore filler 0511 (available in different colors). Take the appropriate color for the wood, Bouche pores 0508 thinner and heavy canvas to fill. This process is recommended for woods with large pores, such as rosewood, mahogany and rosewood. It saves a great deal of time over the traditional method for furniture with a lot of moulding or fluting. It is very stable over time.

APPLICATION On a clean wood surface, using the large filling cloth impregnated with Pore-filler 0508we apply the Plug pores in even, criss-crossing coats, without thickness after drying for about 4 hours, sand with STEERATER 320 sandpaperRepeat if necessary. If you need to match shades, do so after the Bouche pores (égrainé).

3) – Traditional method: with pad and pumice stone

It is necessary to have:

Fine pumice 6/0 powder

Fine varnish alcohol SA 0300

canvas to fill

– old wool sock

– pad varnish 0555

varnishing canvas and varnishing oil 0301

THE STAMP: It’s important to make a stamp that’s well adapted to your hand, and to store it in an airtight box with rubbing alcohol so that it doesn’t dry out between uses. Take some large canvas to fill (approx. 30×30 cm), a piece of wool sock without beading, make a ball 8x5x5 according to your hand, and cover it with the canvas by folding it appropriately.

FILLING” APPLICATION: Example: for a 4-drawer chest of drawers with a wooden top, the work is divided into 4 passes: 1 side, 1 drawer – top – 1 drawer, front – 1 drawer, 1 side, 1 drawer, to make optimum use of the buffer. Keep this breakdown for all operations. The pad prepared in this way should be soaked in Varnishing Alcohol. A small amount of pumice powder is sprinkled on the surface to be filled (it can be tinted with decorative earths), eg. Mahogany: apply a little red and yellow ochre decorating clay in small pinches and start turning with your pad, pressing hard until the pores are completely filled. Care must be taken to ensure that the edges and corners are well defined. Add varnishing spirit to the pad and pumice powder, but less and less to avoid soaking and excess pumice powder. This operation is repeated 2 or 3 times, 24 hours apart, to let the pumice “DRY” into the wood pores as it dries. Sand lightly between operations.

THE LOAD:

The charge consists in gradually applying the varnish to the wood with the pad, prepared by the “FILL” process.

The stamp is prepared in the same way as the filling stamp, but the coarse canvas is replaced by varnishing canvas (finer and more regular, which does not wrinkle). This pad is initially soaked in pad varnish (tablespoon) and varnishing alcohol (2 to 3 tablespoons, depending on pad size). Without applying pressure, start turning the pad in concentric movements so that the entire surface is covered with varnish.

For moldings, grooves and corners, cover with a small cotton swab moistened with the same varnish (1/3) and fine spirit (2/3). Allow to dry for 8 hours. This operation isolates before applying the oil to the pad. If oil penetrates the stain, place some Terre de Sommières on it for 12 to 24 hours and the stain will disappear.

The oil makes the pad glide. Place a drop of 0301 oil on the pad with the tip of your finger. Repeat this operation as the need arises. Be careful: too much oil makes the varnish thick and greasy, as does excess varnish. The quality of a varnish depends on the dosage of ingredients and the pressure exerted on the pad, and this can only be acquired with practice. Turn the pad regularly, respecting the work distribution: 1 side, 1 drawer, … until everything is varnished. Leave to “DRY” for 24 or 48 hours. Repeat the same operation, reducing the amount of varnish little by little and replacing it with rubbing alcohol and removing the oil, thus “CLEARING” the varnish.

The stamp must hover over the work to avoid “BURNING”. After curing for 8 h, use a clean pad to apply Popote 0706 without pressing too hard, drying the pad to obtain a clear, glossy varnish (see MAINTENANCE).
